Overview
What is the 25C Credit?
The Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit is administered by IRS / Internal Revenue Service and available to eligible properties in United States (federal). Eligibility
Am I eligible?
- You must own and live in the home as your primary residence (existing homes only — not new construction).
- The home must be located in the United States.
- Improvements must meet the efficiency standards specified in IRA §25C (e.g. ENERGY STAR Most Efficient or CEE tiers for heat pumps).
- The credit is nonrefundable: it reduces the federal income tax you owe but cannot be carried forward to future years.
- Annual limits apply per category — $2,000 for heat pumps/heat-pump water heaters and $1,200 combined for other measures.

Process
How it works
- 1
Have a contractor install qualifying equipment and keep all receipts and manufacturer certification statements.
- 2
Confirm the product meets the §25C efficiency tier and record its PIN/qualified-manufacturer identifier where required.
- 3
File IRS Form 5695 (Residential Energy Credits) with your federal income-tax return for the year the work was completed.
- 4
The credit is applied against the income tax you owe when you file.
